Summative Practicum

Careers 7 – Career Exploration/Research
For Careers 7, our one major project was job research and a brochure design. The students were assigned a job to research, and had to answer the pre-determined research questions, using computers in the school lab. They learnt about the average salary, job atmosphere, education needed, etc. for their assigned job. Once their job research was complete, we progressed into the pamphlet/brochure design. The students measured a white piece of paper and folded it brochure-style, and then got to work on designing their brochures themselves. The final step of this consecutive process was to present their information to the class enacting the role of an entrepreneur at a Career Fair. The students had the opportunity to assess one another and provide each other with constructive feedback following their presentations, as well as participate in a gallery walk to view all of the brochures.

English Language Arts 7 – Poetry
My large unit for English 7 was poetry. Attached is the PowerPoint that I used to introduce the topic to the students through terminology and examples. The students had interactive notes to follow and fill-in throughout the lesson. After this, we did several lessons on reading/deciphering poetry, such as “The Jabberwocky” by Lewis Carroll. I made sure to include some engaging opportunities for collaboration and creativity within the English lessons. For example, the students created their own imaginary creatures to accompany The Jabberwocky poem. Their final project for the unit was to create a Blackout poem, using a magazine or newspaper article.
Languages 7 – French: La Maison Vocabulary
The students completed a unit in French/Languages on vocabulary in French, specifically household furniture and rooms. We began with a vocabulary lesson and learning how to use a French-English dictionary for translations. Then, the students participated in a formally-observed lesson playing Jeopardy to practice the terminology. Finally, the students completed a project on a large piece of white paper, designing a ‘blueprint’ for their dream house, and labelling it in French. The students got really creative with this project, and got really invested into using French language for things that they were interested in.

Math 7 – Introduction to Algebra
In math, the students were first introduced to basic algebra. They began with finding the missing value within expressions/equations represented by pictures. We then progressed to one-step algebraic equations and then two-step algebraic equations. Many lessons involved using individual whiteboards, teamwork, and then individual practice. The students enjoyed solving ‘Task Cards’ for each new concept, as they thrive in a competitive environment and wanted to achieve the same level of understanding (to the best of their abilities) as their classmates.
Physical and Health Education 7 – Weight Room
In Physical Education, the duration of my time spent with the students was in the Weight Room. We began by learning about SMART Goals, and setting individual goals for ourselves to meet our unique physical, mental, and emotional needs. The students were assisted with equipment as needed, and encouraged to try new things as they felt comfortable. They were held accountable for participation by completing a Fitness Log for each class and a Weekly SMART Goals Check-in, ensuring that they were staying consistent with their goals. As an introduction to utilizing weight room equipment and finding ways that they could enjoy working out, the students did a great job!
Science 7 – Classifying Matter
The students learnt about elements, compounds, mixtures, and solutions in relation to classifying matter. We began the unit by designing an Element Superhero/Villain that had powers relating specifically to the Periodic Table of Elements. We worked with the BC Science Probe 7 Textbook, as well as completing a variety of hands-on, experiential learning opportunities as well, such as experiments, group work, and games. We finished the unit with a summative assessment, and the students displayed a great understanding of the material that was covered.

Social Studies 7 – Ancient Egypt
In Social Studies, the students learnt about Ancient Egypt. We read from the textbook ‘Ancient Civilizations’, watched videos, and collaborated throughout the learning process. Written output and research were the primary focuses of this unit, with integrated hands-on activities throughout. The students did a Mummifying an Apple/Potato project to create an attainable mummification themselves and watch the progression of rotting over a period of time. They created their own name tags using Hieroglyphics, and completed the unit with a summative inquiry-project.

Arts Education 7 – Pop Art, Valentine’s Day, Onomatopoeia
